An overview of the metal filing cabinet’s origins

Metal filing cabinets continue to be as popular as ever. This is surprising considering that these steel cabinets with visible welds in the corners were actually originally manufactured over 60 years ago. The manufacture of these cabinets began shortly after world war two when steel plate facilities and production factories were suddenly left with nothing to build. Production began by using what small amounts of materials were left over from the war to build tiny file card storage boxes. Those four by six inch metal boxes eventually evolved to become the tall vertical metal filing cabinets we use today.
